Background of the Study
Legislative measures have been increasingly recognized as essential tools for preserving indigenous languages. In Enugu, where the Igbo language is a cornerstone of cultural identity, government interventions in the form of legislative acts aim to promote and safeguard language usage. Such measures include mandates for bilingual education, funding for cultural programs, and support for media productions in Igbo (Okafor, 2023). These laws are intended to create an environment where Igbo is not only maintained as a heritage language but is also actively used in public and institutional domains. The legislative framework supports curriculum development, teacher training, and the production of standardized language materials. However, the effectiveness of these measures depends on consistent implementation and community compliance. This study examines the impact of legislative measures on Igbo language preservation in Enugu by evaluating policy outcomes, enforcement mechanisms, and stakeholder perspectives, thereby assessing how legal frameworks contribute to sustaining Igbo as a living language (Ike, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite legislative efforts to preserve the Igbo language, implementation gaps and enforcement challenges persist in Enugu. Inconsistent application of policies and limited resource allocation hinder the effectiveness of these measures, potentially leading to language attrition. This study seeks to address the gap by evaluating the impact of legislative measures on Igbo language preservation, identifying obstacles in policy enforcement, and proposing solutions to strengthen legal support for the language (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of legislative measures in promoting Igbo language preservation.
To identify challenges in the implementation of these laws.
To recommend strategies for improved enforcement and resource allocation.
